ISHA – The Hip Preservation Society is delighted to announce that it has selected the city of Fukuoka, Japan as the location of its 17th Annual Scientific Meeting. Taking place at Fukuoka International Congress Center on 2nd to 4th October 2025, the Meeting will bring together worldwide arthroscopic and open hip surgeons, sports physicians and rehabilitation professionals to present and exchange their knowledge, best practice and important results from their research. The 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting marks ISHA’s first in-person congress in the Asia-Pacific region since its 2018 Meeting in Melbourne, Australia, and will be the first Annual Scientific Meeting to take place in East Asia.

Local Host Chair Dr Soshi Uchida MD PhD, an internationally renowned orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon based at Wakamatsu Hospital of the University of Occupational and Environmental Health in nearby Kitakyushu, said of the announcement: “It is my great honour and privilege to welcome friends, colleagues and all of the hip preservation community to Fukuoka City, which is a gateway to the world, especially the rest of Asia.”

Located on Kyūshū, the southern- and westernmost of the main islands, Fukuoka City is reachable within just 3 hours from most major East Asian cities, and offers international delegates direct links from over 20 worldwide airports, as well as excellent connectivity through other Japanese transport hubs via air and high-speed rail.

With over 2.5 million foreign visitors per year and a long tradition as a place of trade, rapidly-growing Fukuoka City promises an environment that is highly conducive to scientific exchange. Scientific Programme Chair Dr Olufemi R. Ayeni MD PhD FRCSC, Professor and Academic Head of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, explained: “Fukuoka City is an exceptional location to bring together the world’s best in hip preservation. It is a vibrant and welcoming city that is steeped in history, and the robust scientific and social agenda will make this event memorable for all attendees.”

Fukuoka International Congress Center is well equipped to facilitate a successful global scientific meeting and has a track record of hosting top-level domestic and international medical conferences, being surrounded by a number of leading university hospitals. An enriching experience also awaits delegates in the wider city and beyond, with highlights including expansive green spaces, world-class cuisine and unique cultural experiences, all accessible via a reliable public transport network.

In keeping with ISHA’s mission to lead the way in education and research around preservation of the hip, the 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting will showcase the latest research, technology and expertise in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine, and will be accompanied by a dedicated Physiotherapy Programme and meeting of the Japanese Arthroscopy Society. It is intended that, as well as allowing ISHA’s international audience to tap into specialist local expertise, the 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting will allow the Society to continue to spread awareness and knowledge of hip preservation, to the benefit of patients across the Asia-Pacific region. Surgeons, trainees, researchers, physiotherapists and allied health professionals from around the world are invited to submit their abstracts from January 2025.

ISHA would like to extend its thanks to Japan National Tourism Organization and Fukuoka Convention & Visitors Bureau for their support in the organisation of the ISHA 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting. Kazuto Shintou, Chief Executive of Fukuoka Convention & Visitors Bureau stated: “We are delighted to have this opportunity to bring the ISHA Annual Scientific Meeting 2025 to Fukuoka City. We are famous in Japan for our hospitality, and look forward to extending a warm Fukuoka welcome to the ISHA ASM 2025 conference participants. We will do our utmost to ensure your conference will be a great success!”

About ISHA:

ISHA – The Hip Preservation Society has been the creation of many individuals, each united by a common interest in the expanding arena of hip preservation. The Society was officially formed in Paris (France) in May 2008 with a focus on hip arthroscopic surgery, and its Founding Members represent but a few of the many individuals around the world who are interested in this evolving area of hip surgery. Over time, ISHA has gone from strength to strength, deciding in 2017 to expand the Society’s remit with a change in name to “The Hip Preservation Society”. ISHA now counts practitioners engaged in all areas of hip preservation, including open surgery, sports medicine, and rehabilitation, among its great fellowship of friends. In 2022 ISHA achieved charitable status in recognition of its undertaking to improve patient education, globalised learning and patient care through early screening to improve early disease diagnosis, supporting education, training and research in hip preservation surgery and rehabilitation.
